can anyone recommend the best way to get from Bangkok to Laos?

Take train to Nong Khai ... stay for a few days at Mutmee or take a tuktuk to the Friendship Bridge which is the border crossing and Mekong crossing rolled into one. Get yourself into Ventiane and off you go ...

... piece of advice we both forgot ... don't forget the passport photos you'll need for your Laos visa ... and know the process of procuring a Laos visa and crossing the border takes a little time.

You need two passport photos. Get these in Thailand and it'll be cheaper. Also, try and find out how much the VISA is in dollars. UK citizens pay 35 dollars or 1500B. Paying in dollars means you save a few hundren baht. I always go for this option so i have a few more hundred baht for some much loved Beer Laos :)

hey we went over the border a few days ago and didn't need photos - they photocopied our passport. the songthaews were the cheaper option to get into Vientiane - 40baht instead of 100baht for a minivan.
